Why Tenant to Tenant Migration is Changing Fast

Apr 23, 2020 by Natalie Frith

The changing needs of enterprise customers have propelled technological advancements in Office 365 tenant to tenant migration, to the point where projects can now be implemented in a way that could not have been envisioned even two years ago.

Until recently, enterprise tenant to tenant migrations had been highly-phased and lengthy processes. This year we are seeing customers wish to implement smaller, shorter phases we often refer to as ‘big bangs’, due to the volume of data that can now be migrated at once.

This migration strategy is driven by:

  • Large, multi-workload migrations
  • The tightly coupled nature of those workloads based on user collaboration patterns
  • The growing need for continuity of user service

With IT operations strategies undergoing much change due to the recent workforce transition to virtual home offices, the adoption of platforms like Teams can no longer be paused because of an upcoming migration.

Since Teams has become a critical collaboration tool in this ‘new normal,’ the data contained within (as well as its associated SharePoint sites) is now considered a core competency and a crucial workload that must be migrated alongside email.

Furthermore, as virtual communication increasingly becomes the sole form of communication through email, Teams chat and Teams calls/meetings – these functions are literally a lifeline that businesses simply cannot do without, even for an hour or two. Continuity of service is no longer a ‘nice to have’ – it is a standard expectation because interruption is just not an option.

New vendor requirements for enterprise migrations

This shift in market needs has changed the vendor requirements for enterprise migrations in four important ways:

  • More thorough, data-driven planning
  • Infrastructure-free deployment
  • Much higher levels of performance
  • The ability to automate custom actions to match a customer’s environment as part of operations

For migration vendors, this means projects must adhere to accelerated timelines, running smoothly and at lightning speeds. In order to successfully pull this off, extensive pre-planning supported by robust reporting mechanisms is required so that any potential complications are planned for and mitigated against accordingly.

In order to achieve these higher levels of performance and satisfy customer needs, multiple workloads for entire tenants must be migrated at the same time during weekend cutovers so there is no interference in collaboration.

The only way this is possible is if the highest levels of speed are not just attained but sustained, and that as many actions as possible are automated, reducing the margin for human error.

Cloud Commander and our unique position in the market

With over a decade of experience in the migration space, we’ve had a pulse on these changing enterprise customer needs since the inception of tenant to tenant migrations.

We’ve distilled those customer requirements into our tenant to tenant migration software, Cloud Commander, and made regular incremental improvements, including substantial performance gains.

Tenant to Tenant Migration Speeds

With recently sustained speeds of 1TB/hour, we are now able to migrate entire enterprise tenants in a single weekend cutover. Previously unheard of, what was once seemingly unattainable is now a reality and a new standard in tenant to tenant migration that provides better outcomes for our customers.

Specifically, our customers can complete projects much faster and minimize user disruption, which is essential for businesses that never stop moving.
