New Widget to improve your Secure Score

31 Aug 2017 by Doug Davis

We are pleased to announce that we have added a new widget to Cogmotive Reports based around Microsoft’s Secure Score program. Secure Score is a Microsoft offering, free to any Office 365 tenant, that calculates a security risk score, called Secure Score- it allows you to drill into the tasks that you can undertake to improve your score (check out our blog on the feature). There are a daunting number of security settings within Office 365 and your ability to track, configure, and set these is bounded by the limited time you have to spend as a busy administrator. It can be confusing and time-consuming to review each of these settings, especially as they’re dispersed throughout various areas of the Administrative tools.
There isn’t any natural connection point between the Office Admin tools and the Secure Score site (it is a stand-alone site outside of the normal Admin tools). Our new Secure Score Widget brings it front and centre in your Cogmotive Reports Dashboard.

The widget shows your current Secure Score and can be refreshed to update. It also shows the maximum points you can get, and more importantly how you compare to the average of all other tenants Microsoft calculates this for.
If you are dissatisfied with your Secure Score (the average is shockingly low, so many of you might be!) you can click on the widget to get to the securescore.office.com site for further details.
Once on this Microsoft site you can explore the actions you can take – recommended examples are actions like checking passwords and mobile settings. If you have the appropriate administrative privileges for the relevant areas, you can review these actions and remediate any areas where you might be vulnerable, or under-protected. After you make the change you score should go up!
Here is an example of one such action: ensuring you configure expiration time for external sharing links.

For each action, you can launch the appropriate Administrative UI after reviewing the impact.

To do this, simply click the ‘Launch Now’.

Making the change will give you the points associated with that action, and this will quickly be reflected in your score.
To use this new widget, go into your Dashboard and select the button in the upper right corner, and then select the Secure Score Widget. It can then be placed on the dashboard.
The Secure Score widget is a direct result of a recent Hackathon within the development team! Make sure you check back for more of these quick innovation features from our quarterly Hackathons.
