Offline email data is typically stored in ‘personal storage table’ (PST) files, the default format for storing messages and other items within Microsoft Exchange Client, Windows Messaging and Outlook. Organizations typically have many thousands of PSTs scattered throughout the enterprise – on desktops, laptops, removable disks and shared drives. Not only do PSTs present management headaches; they also create security and compliance risks.

PSTs are not centrally managed, so there is no way of confirming exactly how many there are in the infrastructure, where they are, whether they are corrupted, whether they are duplicates or whether the people who created them have left the company.
